You need a device running:

iOS 8+
Android 4.0+
Windows 10+

Bb Student for Android and iOS was designed and built for phones, but is fully compatible with iPads running iOS 8+ and Android tablets running 4.0+. When you search the App Store from an iPad, be sure to change the iPad Only toggle to iPhone Only to find Bb Student.

The Windows version is compatible with tablets and phones.

How do I get the right OS on my Apple device?

Bb Student supports iOS 8 and later. To learn which operating system version you are running, see iPhone, iPad, iPod: How to Find the Software Version.

To learn how to update your iOS software, see Update Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

Is Bb Student available for my school?

Use the Mobile School Finder Page (available in English only) to search for your school. Schools that use Blackboard do not necessarily enable mobile device access. If you don't see your school listed, you can contact them and inquire whether they plan to enable mobile access.

Can I use Bb Student and Blackboard Mobile Learn at the same time?

Bb Student was built specifically to enable you to have a robust course experience on your mobile device. We encourage you to use Bb Student in place of Mobile Learn to have the best mobile experience.

Log In FAQs

How do I get help if I forget my username or password?

We'd love to help, but Blackboard does not have access to student account information. To reset or retrieve your login credentials, contact your school's IT help desk. You can usually find a help desk link or email on your school's Blackboard website. The URL for your school is often https://yourschool.blackboard.com or something similar.

What if my Blackboard username and password don't work for Bb Student?

If your Blackboard username and password provided by your school aren't working for logging in to the app, contact your school's IT Help Desk.

I don't see my courses. Where are they?

Your courses might not have been opened by your school yet. Bb Student only shows courses that are open and available and courses where you are enrolled as a student. Often, courses are opened near the first day of classes.

Bb Student is designed especially for students. If you have a different role in a course, such as teaching assistant, the course does not display in Bb Student.

How do I find my school?

Just start typing your school's name on the login screen in the app.

Additionally, you can search with the Mobile School Finder Page (available in English only). Schools that use Blackboard do not necessarily enable mobile device access. If you don't see your school listed, you can contact them and inquire whether they plan to enable mobile access.

Does Bb Student work for instructors?

If you are enrolled as an instructor in a course, it does not show on the Courses page in Bb Student. Instructors can use the Blackboard Mobile Learn (help available in English only) or Bb Grader apps.

How to stay organized and know when work is due

What if I have a technical difficulty while I'm taking a test or working on an assignment?

For long assignments and tests you should periodically save drafts. This option is available if your instructor has allowed draft saving. Drafts are stored locally on your device and are maintained until you submit the assignment or test.

If you lose your internet connection unexpectedly, contact your instructor immediately.

Why am I sent to my school's Blackboard website to take a test?

When an instructor creates a test, they might include test questions that are not compatible with Bb Student. In those cases, you are directed to take the test in a web browser instead of the app.

Tests with the following questions can be taken in Bb Student: Multiple Choice, True/False, Either/Or, Short Answer, and Essay. If tests contain other question types, Bb Student directs you to a web view of Learn to complete the test. It's best to take these types of test on a desktop web browser.

How do I see my grade?

Feature FAQs

How do I stay organized and know when work is due?

Your activity stream lets you know when new course content, assignments, and tests are available and when work is due. Click an item in the stream to start work on it right away.

Each course outline lists assignments and tests. Course work that is due soon is highlighted in red to show that it needs to be completed.

Push notifications appear on your device even if you don't have Bb Student open. Notifications give you an extra reminder about upcoming tests, past due tests, and new grades.

Select Due Dates from the main navigation panel to see upcoming assignments and tests for all of your courses. Whenever your instructors give a test or assignment a due date, it appears here. This view shows you a list of time-sensitive work only, so that you can quickly prioritize work across all of your courses.

What shows in my activity stream?

Here are the specific items that show in your activity stream.

  • alerts from your school
  • course announcements
  • tests and assignments that are due today or this week; instructor changes to due dates are automatically reflected in the stream
  • calendar events for today and the week; instructor changes to events are automatically reflected in the stream
  • grades posted for tests, assignments, graded discussions
  • grade changed for tests, assignments, graded discussions
  • item added for course items, assignments, tests
  • missed, overdue, and completed assignments and tests

Blackboard Learn announcements are presented in the Activity Stream in Bb Student. The app doesn't have the Announcements tool that is available in Blackboard Learn in a web browser.

In Bb Student's activity stream, you can dismiss items in the Important section after you read them.

  • When you dismiss a course announcement, it's no longer accessible in the app on any device.
  • When you dismiss a system announcement, it's no longer accessible in the app on the specific device where you dismissed the system announcement.
  • Dismissing announcements in the app does not carry over to your web view of Blackboard Learn.

How do change my profile?

Your Bb Student profile is populated with Blackboard Learn profile information, including your name and avatar. You can change avatars if your school enables avatar management. You can't change your name or other information because that data is pulled from your school's Blackboard Learn system. In the future, you will be able to add more school tiles. Your profile information and avatar aren't shared with others in the app at this time.

  1. Access your profile by tapping your avatar in the app's main menu.
  2. Tap your picture and take a new photo with your device's camera or select a saved photo.

When you change your avatar in the app, it replaces all instances of your avatar in Bb Student and Blackboard Learn. When you are in a Collaborate session, you see avatars of participants who have uploaded avatars in the desktop or mobile versions of Collaborate with the Ultra Experience. At this time, your Bb Student avatar functions separately from your Collaborate avatar.

Why can't I change my avatar?

Your school might have enabled cloud profiles on the Blackboard system. At this time, Bb Student does not support avatar changes when cloud profiles are enabled.

What are the types of push notifications?

Push notifications pop up on your device for upcoming tests, past due tests, and new grades.

Push notifications aren't available for assignments at this time. Assignments do show in the app's Activity Stream and in Due Dates if your instructor set due dates for them.

You can change your push notifications. Log in to your Blackboard web account on your computer to change the types of notifications you receive. If you are unable to edit the mobile notifications, your school's Blackboard administrator has set them to be always on or always off.

How do I turn on push notifications or change notification settings?

Select OK if your mobile device asks if you want to allow notifications for Bb Student.

You can change how your device displays Bb Student notifications and turn them on or off.

  • iOS: Go to Settings. Select Notifications and locate Bb Student in the list of apps.
  • Android: Go to Settings. Locate Apps, select Bb Student, and tap Notifications.
  • Windows: Go to Settings. Select Notifications + Actions and locate Bb Student in the list of apps.

Too many push notifications? Log in to your Blackboard web account on your computer to change the types of notifications you receive. If you are unable to edit the mobile notifications, your school's Blackboard administrator has set them to be always on or always off.

Not receiving push notifications? Make sure you enable notifications on your Blackboard web account AND on your mobile device.

How do I submit files?

Assignments and tests can include attachments from your mobile device. For iOS, photos from your camera roll can be uploaded and submitted. For Android, all files available in the file system can be attached and included in assignments. The maximum file size you can upload is 25 MB.

For assignments, you can also access files stored in Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox.

How do I see my grades?

Go to Grades in the main navigation. Overall grades for each course are shown. Tap on a course grade to see a breakdown of all the assignments, tests, and quizzes that make up the current overall grade.

You can also go to a course and tap the arrow on the top right corner to view your course grades.

Can I remove a course from my course list?

Bb Student automatically puts courses into the current, past, and upcoming lists based on each course's settings in the system. You can manage which courses show in your Current course list within the app. Scroll to the bottom of your course list. Tap the box to select which courses you want to hide. Information for hidden courses is not included in Grades and Activity Stream.

Due to a performance issue, Due Dates still shows hidden course's information at this time.

How do I participate in a video conference in the app?

Blackboard Collaborate with the Ultra experience is integrated into Bb Student. All you need is a link to the Collaborate session from your instructor. Nothing extra to install!

More on Collaborate

Where is my course "stuff"? I don't see it in Bb Student.

Bb Student works as a collaboration between our app software and your school’s server. Blackboard cannot guarantee that content created by instructors or other users is compatible with this app. Features and functionality may be limited at times if your school hasn't updated the appropriate software or experiences server outages.

If there is an item you can access on the course website, but not in the app, contact your instructor.

Why don't I see some Blackboard features in the app?

Bb Student continues to provide enhancements and add features such as groups. Stay tuned for future updates!*

Where is the mark reviewed option on content?

Bb Student does not currently support the Mark Reviewed feature. Please access a course in your desktop web browser to use this feature if your instructor has made it available.

Bb Student does support adaptive release of content, where instructors can release content only to students who meet certain criteria. The criteria are date, grade, or student membership in a group or list created by the instructor.

Is the app available in my language?

Bb Student is available in 30 languages, including English, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. See the list of supported languages in the release notes.

The localization settings for Bb Student comes from your device's operating system. The settings for your school's Blackboard Learn system and course-level settings are not enforced in the app.
