Grade Equivalent Scales

If you average term grades to calculate the final grade, you can now set equivalent grade scales to determine any tie breakers or cutoffs when a grade falls between two letter or number grades. The Grade Equivalent Scales option will be available on the Grading tab only if the General Settings option is configured to Use Grading Scales and Average Term Grades to Calculate Final Grade.

Depending on whether you choose a tie breaker option to calculate the final grades (Tiebreaker Values), or assign the lowest cutoff value for a final grade (Assign Cutoff Values), the Grade Equivalent Scales option will display Grading Tiebreakers or Grade Cutoff Values.

How to Set Grading Tiebreakers

The tiebreaker values allow you to round any value .5 and higher up to the next grade value. Any value .49 and less will be rounded down. You can also set tie breakers to round the score by a specific term or exam grade.

  1. On the Settings page, click Grade Equivalent Scales from the list of Grading options to access the grade equivalent settings.
  2. Select the grade scale to configure from the Scale drop-down.

If you are using multiple grade scales in your gradebook, you should set a grade equivalent scale for each grade scale.

  3. Select the Grading Tiebreakers you want to use for the tiebreaker and grade for the reporting period.
If you use the Round Up option, any value .5 and higher up to the next grade value, and any value .49 and less will be rounded down. If you select a specific term grade or exam grade, that grade will be used as the tiebreaker.
  4. Double-click on each Value box to enter the value for each grade.
  5. Click Save when finished.

How to Set Grade Cutoff Values

The grade cutoff values allow you to create your own round up/down scheme for your gradebooks, by entering a minimum acceptable value for a grade.

  3. In the Grade Scale area, double-click on each Value box to enter the value for each grade.
  4. In the Grade Cutoff Values area, double-click on each Minimum Value box to enter the lowest grade acceptable for the assignment of the grades in the scale.
  5. Click Save when finished.
