Maintain Your Website

Whether Edline Design Services created your Edline website or you created your own, you can enjoy changing your website at your own convenience. You can easily remove and rearrange portions of your website, change menus and footers, replace images and quickly update the names of specific boxes. You can also update all the property settings detailed in the Set Design Properties topic, such as fonts, colors, and layout. The ability to rearrange the design or update property settings is usually available to super users or users with design permissions enabled, but can be enabled for other school staff.

To update the design of a specific box on a live individual webpage (such as your homepage), go directly to that page, select Edit This Page from the Edline menu bar, move your mouse to the box you want to change, and then select the Edit Design Properties File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/090_Maintain_Your_Website/EditDesignPropIcon.jpg icon. From there you can update for that particular current page only, all the properties as described in the various topics in the Set Design Properties section. To move boxes, you can drag-and-drop the box to change the location in the current webpage. To edit other areas of the page, launch the Site Designer tree-view by clicking the Designer icon from the Edit Mode toolbar.

Editing the webpage directly, without going through Manage Design, changes only the page you are editing (the Current Page) and does not cascade changes throughout your website. If you want to update a property affecting all your webpages, such as the color theme or a default setting you added to a particular page type, you must open the Manage Design page from the Tools menu on your homepage and edit the default designs that affect the page type.

How to Change Colors on Your Website

Blackboard recommends changing the color of the Custom Color boxes if your design has utilized the Color Theme functionality. You only need to change the color in one place and it will be updated throughout the website wherever that color is assigned. For example, if you change a custom color from blue to red, any section of the website where the custom color was assigned will be changed to red.

  1. To change the colors of the overall website, open the homepage, and select Manage Design from the Tools menu.
  2. Select the design you want to edit and click Edit to open Site Designer.
  3. Click Page from the Design Properties.
  4. Click the Color Theme tab.
  5. Keep the Color Name box and set any new colors you want to update in each of the Custom Color # boxes by typing the hexadecimal number color code in the box, or click the ellipsis icon (File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/090_Maintain_Your_Website/ellipsis.jpg) to access the color pallet where you can select the color. The new color will appear in every place on the website assigned to that custom color name.

How to Rearrange or Remove Boxes on Your Website

Edline allows you to rearrange the layout of your webpage by moving boxes to other columns or sections of the webpage, or you can remove the boxes from the page. The ability to rearrange the design is usually available to super users or users with design permissions enabled, but can be enabled for other school staff.

Blackboard recommends NOT rearranging, adding, or removing boxes in the Middle section of a webpage in the All Pages design. If desired for a specific page type, it should be done by creating a default design targeting that specific page type and then updating the design through the Manage Design page.

    • To exit without saving any changes made, click Ignore changes and exit.
  7. Click OK when finished.

How to Update the Content in the Boxes of Your Website

You can change the box content on your website. You can update the title of any box header, update the footer information, update the menu bar, and change pictures or slide shows while in the edit mode. In some cases changing box content, such as editing the box title, affects only the page containing the content. In other cases, such as a footer which appears everywhere in the website, updating the information affects all pages. The procedures in this section will state whether changes affect all pages or only the page being edited.

In contrast to content changes, changing the design properties (color, fonts, borders, etc.), on a page only affects the page being edited. To change a design property in groups of pages throughout your website, you must go to the Manage Design page and select the default design to edit. Editing a default design will affect all the page types where that default is applied.
