Deploy Templates

For Edline templates to work properly as explained in this topic, schools must follow the instructions in this topic by creating a new design that is based off the template. They must NOT copy the template into their school design library.

Your district website designer or Edline design services can create templates for your district which your schools can choose as the basis for their school design. Schools can then customize the design to fit their particular style, logos, menu navigation, color theme, or whatever they desire.

How to Select District Templates for Your School

After your district has the templates in its district template library, you can create your school design based off the templates.

How to Create the School All Pages and Homepage Design

  1. Sign into the school as the Edline district or school super user.
  2. Open the main school homepage and from the Tools menu, select Manage Design for the Manage Design page.

The name of the page you will be editing will appear in the large header — it should correspond with your school’s name.

  3. To create an All Pages default design, complete the following steps.
    • From the Default Designs tab, click New to create the new design.
    • Type the Name for New Design, such as Basic Design for All Pages.
    • From the Base on template box, click the ellipsis File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/ellipsis.jpg icon to access the Select a Template dialog.
    • Click the name of the district template to use as the basis for your All Pages school design (such as Template 1 for All Pages), and click Choose Selected.
    • Click OK.
A dialog appears questioning which types of pages you want to use the design.
    • Check ALL the boxes to set the design to all of the school pages.
    • Click OK to create the All Pages design.
  4. To create a homepage default design, complete the following steps.
    • From the Manage Design page, click the Current Page tab.
    • Click New to create the new design for your school’s homepage.
    • Click the name of the district template to use as the basis for your school homepage design (such as Template 1 for Homepage), and click Choose Selected.
    • Click OK to create the homepage design.

How to Customize Template-Based All Pages Design

After you create the new school designs based on the templates designed at the district level, you can update the design features and fill the placeholders the district created so that the menu and design fit your school’s needs.

It is important that you first edit the All Pages default design since it will affect all the pages in your website, including the homepage.

  1. Sign into the school as the Edline district or school super user (or design manager).
  2. Open the main school homepage and from the Tools menu, select Manage Design for the Manage Design page.
  3. From the Default Designs tab, select the new school All Pages design created from the district template.

In your All Pages design, only adjust items that will apply to all pages, such as colors, menu, footer, or header images. Do NOT change other images, box placements, or layout options in the All Pages design. Particular images, slide shows, text documents (such as mission statements), or other information meant for the homepage only are customized later in the Current Page tab.

  4. After selecting the All Pages design, click the Edit button and a dialog appears requesting you to select a page type to test your design changes.
  5. Choose a class or other group page to view your design changes.

The remaining steps in the current section provide brief instructions on how to update the most common design features many schools will want to update after creating a design from a district template. For more information about maintaining your design or changing the design properties, see the Maintain Your Website Design topic or Set Design Properties topic.

Change the Color

  1. Select Page from the Design Properties.
  2. Expand the Color Theme tab.
  3. Keep the Color Name box and set any new colors you want to update in each of the Custom Color # fields by typing the hexadecimal number color code in the box, or click the ellipsis icon (File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/ellipsis.jpg) to access the color pallet where you can select the color.

The new color will appear in every place on the website assigned to that custom color name.

Replace the Header

There are two ways that districts and schools can add headers to their websites — (1) by selecting a header image in the Header tab of the Site Designer tree-view dialog; or (2) replacing an image set as a place holder in the Top section of the design. The following steps cover headers added to the website through Site Designer (method 1). To replace a header placeholder image (method 2), see the Replace Images topic.

When you replace the header in the All Pages design, the header will be replaced on all the pages of your website. If you want a different header on your homepage, you must select the homepage design from the Current Page tab of the Manage Design page.

  1. Select Header from the Design Properties.
  2. Expand the Other tab.
  3. In the Header Image box, select Upload and Browse for your header image file.

After you have replaced the district placeholder header and set your own school header image for the first time, you can replace it directly on the live, active page itself if you want to make further changes.

  4. Click Save to update the current design or Save As to save the design as a new copy.

You can also choose to Revert or undo the changes made since your last save. For more information on the saving options in Site Designer, see the Using Site Designer topic.

Add the Footer Content

  1. Hover over the footer box in the design.
  2. Click the Fill Placeholder File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/fillplaceholdericon.jpg icon.
  3. In the Add Content section, click Enter Text by Hand.
  4. Type and format your footer information.
  5. Click Save and Return when finished.
  6. Click Save to update the current design or Save As to save the design as a new copy.
You can also choose to Revert or undo the changes made since your last save. For more information on the saving options in Site Designer, see the Using Site Designer topic.

How to Customize the Template-Based Homepage Design

Edit the All Pages default design first since it will affect all the pages on your website, including the homepage, before you customize your home page design.

  1. Sign into the school as the Edline district or school super user (or design manager).
  2. Open the main school homepage and from the Tools menu, select Manage Design for the Manage Design page.
  3. From the Default Designs tab, select Include during Edit/Preview for the All Pages default design, whether or not the design is live.

This step ensures that you create your new homepage with all the shared settings already configured in the All Pages design. The All Pages settings will flow into the homepage so you will not need to set them again.

  4. Click the Current Page tab.
  5. Select the new homepage design created from the district template.
  6. Click the Edit button to access the Edit Page Mode for Site Designer.

The remaining steps in the current section provide brief instructions on how to update the most common design features many schools will need to update after creating a design from a district template. For more information about maintaining your design or changing the design properties, see the Maintain Your Website Design topic or Set Design Properties topic.

Add Text for Special Documents

You can add and format text for special documents if the district created special school-specific boxes in the design, such as Mission Statements, Principal’s Message, or Student Highlights for each school to edit. Note that these documents can be changed to be any type of special document desired. It does not need to remain the Mission Statement or Principal Message or whatever it was in the original template. Just change the title to fill the box with your special content.

  1. Hover over the specific box in the design.
  2. Click the Fill Placeholder File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/fillplaceholdericon.jpg icon.
  3. In the Add Content area, click Enter Text by Hand.
  4. Type and format your information. Click Save and Return.
  5. Click Save to update the current design or Save As to save the design as a new copy.

Replace Images

Before you substitute any images that the district set in the design, you must first make sure you have a replacement image of the correct size to use. Your district may provide you with the sizes required for each picture. The following list provides some guidelines for replacing images:

  • Do NOT click the Fill Placeholder File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/fillplaceholdericon.jpg icon until you are certain you have another image of the correct size or the section will be blank.
  • Most pages are 950 pixels wide. Pictures less than the full page are the sum of the width of the columns they fill. You can determine the column width by selecting the Design Properties for the column, and clicking the Other tab.
  • You can determine the height of the image by selecting the image in the Design Properties dialog, and clicking the Other tab.
  1. Depending on the type of image you are replacing, see the correct topic:
  2. From the Design Properties, select the Other tab and change Show in Box to Contents Auto ht. instead of Contents Fixed ht.
  3. Adjust the height amount in the Fixed Height box.

Replace Pictures in Your Slide Show

Resize the new pictures before uploading them, and make them the same size or larger than the pictures already in the slide show. Larger pictures will automatically be compressed, but smaller images will leave extra space. To display the size of the pictures already in your slide show, hover over the existing slide show, click the right mouse button and select Properties from the pop-up menu.

  1. From any homepage, click Edit This Page from the menu bar.
  2. Hover over the slide show box, and click the Add an item to this box File:en-us/Edline/040_Super_User/090_Design_Your_Edline_Website/100_Create_District-Wide_Designs_for_Schools/020_Templates/020_Deploy_Templates/addicon.jpg icon to access the Upload Picture Files dialog.
  3. Click Pick Files to select the slide show files for your upload.

To upload multiple files, press the Ctrl key while selecting the file names.

  4. Enter a title and a summary for each file (optional) in the Title and Summary boxes.
  5. Click Start Upload to upload the files.
  6. Click Done when finished uploading all the files.

How to Set the Designs as Active/Live

After you have updated the designs and are ready to make them visible to the public, you must set both the All Pages and the homepage designs as live. Your school’s homepage will not be complete without the All Pages design.

Before marking a design live, view each type of page on your website using the design. From the Manage Design page, select Include during Edit/Preview for the All Pages design. Then click the Edit button and select a different page type to view each time (class, group, folder, and document). That way you can be sure each page reflects the design the way you intended it to appear.

  1. Open the main school homepage and from the Tools menu, select Manage Design to open the Manage Design page.
  2. From the Default Designs tab, select the finished All Pages design and check Live.
  3. Click the Current Page tab to access the homepage design.
  4. Select the finished homepage design and click the Set as Active Design button.
