Recommend Courses for Students

Certain school personnel, such as teachers with specific permissions enabled, can recommend courses to students when Course Requests submissions are enabled. Recommendations help students select which classes are best for them.

Remember — only when recommendations are upgraded to a request by a course request manager will they be included on the student’s request list that is exported to your Student Information System’s (SIS) scheduling software.

The Course Request feature is an Edline add-on feature. Your district or school’s Edline Manager will need to contact Edline support to enable this feature for your website.

How to Recommend a Course for a Student

You must be assigned with special permissions to be able to recommend courses for students. Most teachers will be assigned with recommendation permissions if your school uses Edline’s Course Requests feature.

Standard situations where you will want to recommend courses for a student include:

  • You may want to recommend a student in your class to advance to the next level in a specific subject. For example, if you teach Algebra I, you may recommend which students should advance to Algebra II.
  • You may want to recommend courses to students in your school who are not in your class. For example, you can recommend courses to younger class students that you will teach next year.
  • You may want to recommend courses for your current student who is attending the next-level school next year. For example, if you teach eighth grade and your students will be attending the district high school next year, you can log into the high school’s website if you have the correct permissions, and recommend specific courses.

How to Recommend a Course for a Student in Your Current Class

To recommend a course for a student who is currently in your class, open your class web page.

The fastest way to recommend classes for students in your current class is to select all of the students from the class User List at one time and request the usual course that most of them will take next year. Then, return to the class list and select any students in the class that will not follow the usual sequence and recommend the course they will need to take next year.

  1. From the menu bar on your class web page, select Tools, and then Recommend Courses to access the User List page.
  2. Select the student, and then click Edit Course Requests.
  3. Select the course you want to recommend from the Full Course Catalog section by completing the following steps:
    • If the Jump to list is available, select a class category. For example, select Math to search for an Algebra class. This field may not be available based on your school’s data.
    • Select the name of the course, and then click Recommend Course to recommend the course.
  4. Click Submit.

How to Recommend a Course for a Student at Your School But NOT in Your Current Class

To recommend a course for a student who attends your school, but you currently do not have in class, open the school’s homepage.

  1. From the menu bar on the school’s home webpage, select Tools, and then Recommend Courses to access the school’s full User List page.
  2. Select the student, and then click Edit Course Requests.
  3. Select the course you want to recommend from the Full Course Catalog section by completing the following steps:
    • If the Jump to list is available, select a class category. For example, select Math to search for an Algebra class. This otpion may not be available based on your school’s data.
    • Select the name of the course, and then click Recommend Course to recommend the course.

How to Recommend or Request a Course for Your Current Student Attending a New School Next Year

Districts can configure Edline to allow teachers or counselors of one school to log into the next level school to recommend or request courses for their students attending the next level school the following year. For example, a district high school may allow eighth grade teachers or counselors of local junior high or elementary schools to log into their high school website to recommend or request courses for future high school students. The teachers or counselors will need an activation code from the specific school, and it is recommended that they create a new user name and password and not combine the information with their current Edline account.

  1. Sign into the next-level school’s website.
  2. From the menu bar on the school’s home webpage, select Tools, and then Recommend Courses or Modify Course Requests to access the Manage Course Requests page.
  3. From the For students currently enrolled in list, select the name of your current school.
  4. Click the Recommend Courses or Enable or Edit Course Requests button to access the User List page containing the names of students from your school.

The User List will contain all the students from your school. Use the Search options to narrow the list by the specific grade-level of the students.

  5. Select the student, and then click Edit Course Requests.
  6. Select the course you want to recommend from the Full Course Catalog section by completing the following steps:
    • If the Jump to list is available, select a class category. For example, select Math to search for an Algebra class. This option may not be available based on your school’s data.
    • Select the name of the course, and then click Recommend Course to recommend the course or Add Course Request to request the course for the student.
  7. Click Submit to save your course recommendations or requests.
