Course Level Goals

Courses offered at an institution vary widely and are owned by many different Units. Each course has certain goals that students strive to meet within the timeframe of the course. Course level goals are measurable and students are assessed against them using identified criteria. Course level goals can have very concrete criteria such as range of acceptable test scores that translate into grades, or criteria that are measured by projects demonstrating particular abilities such as critical thinking, expository writing, or scientific analysis.

After Course level goals have been set and added to the system, they can be associated with instruments to measure the level of achievement. Course level goals can also be associated with rubrics to evaluate any criteria and performance indicators for the goal.

Course level goals can be aligned with other goals in Blackboard Learn to analyze how they contribute to the achievements of other Courses, Programs, Units, and the institution as a whole. Course participants can view all of the goals as well as Outcomes Assessment course level goals.

The information required for defining the creation of new course level goals within an institution is determined by the institution and is controlled by a configurable form available in the Template Builder located on the Administrator Panel. Depending on the individual requirements of a course level goal’s definition, data collection fields that reflect the types of data desired can be added. To learn more, see Configuring the Outcomes Environment.

Adding a Course Level Goal

Course level goals are created within a Course using the Features menu.

Course level goals are not accessible from the Unit home page or the Program home page so users cannot see a list of all course level goals for all Courses in a Unit. This is done using the Reporting link on the Administrator Panel under Outcomes Assessment.

Editing a Course Level Goal

Course level goals can be edited manually or by using a batch process. Edit a course level goals to change the goal's properties such as its name, attachments, start or end dates. Edit a course level goal to view and manage the alignments of other goals in the system, or to associate a rubric to the goal.

Removing a Course Level Goal

To remove a course level goal, select the goal and click Remove. Any alignments and associations for that goal are lost, but the associated rubrics and aligned goals remain in the system.

Customizing the List Page for Course Level Goals

Unit Managers have the right to add columns of data, remove columns of data, change the order of the columns, and change the column headers. Removing a column does nothing to the data. It simply removes it from the list page. Changing the column header does not impact the field label on the form. Customized list pages appear the same for all users accessing the Unit.

Course Level Goals and Course Connections

After course level goals have been added to an Outcomes Assessment course, the goals can be connected to any course in Blackboard Learn. The instructor can view the goals from the course Control Panel to ensure that material being delivered in the course meets stated goals. Students can view the goals from the Tool Panel.

To connect Outcomes Assessment course level goal to an existing course, add goals and Course Sections to the Outcomes Assessment Course, and then add the existing course to the properties of the Outcomes Assessment Course Section.

Instructors also can align Blackboard Learn Course Content items to Outcomes Assessment goals using the Discovery interface. To learn more about alignments and the Discovery interface, see Aligning Content to Goals.
