Managing Tools

Blackboard Learn has a robust set of tools and the flexibility to add new tools to the platform. The Manage Tools page lists each tool that is available in Blackboard Learn. Each row shows the availability of the tool to authenticated users, guests, and observers.

  1. For each tool listed the type of tool is identified. 
  2. Turn the availability of the tool on or off for authenticated users.
  3. Lock or unlock the tool availablity setting. If locked, instructors cannot change the setting at the course or organization level. If unlocked, instructors can change the setting at the course or organization level.
  4. When you make a change to the availability settings you are asked to identify where the changes apply. Choose from New or New and existing.
  5. Make the tool available to guests and observers. Select or clear the availability check box to make the tool available or unavailable to guests or observers.

    Tools that have a circle with a diagonal line icon instead of a check box cannot be made available to guests or observers.

  6. Click Submit to save your changes.

How to Manage Tools

  1. On the Administrator Panel, in the Tools and Utilities section, click Tools.
  2. Select one of the following options to set the Tool Availability.

    System tools have only two settings: Always On or Always Off. Course and organization tools have all four settings.

    • Default Off: The tool is set to OFF. However, instructors can choose to make the tool available in individual courses and organizations.
    • Default On: The tool is set to ON. However, instructors can choose to make the tool unavailable in individual courses and organizations.
  3. Select to lock or unlock the tool availability setting.
    • Locked: The tool availablity setting is locked. Instructors cannot change the setting at the course or organization level.
    • Unlocked: The tool availability setting is not locked. Instructors can change the setting at the course or organization level.
  4. If you want the tool to be available to guests and observers, select the appropriate check boxes.
  5. Click Submit.
