Cengage Learning iLrn is an all-in-one diagnostic, tutorial, assessment, assignment, and course management system that saves instructors’ time and enhances students’ language learning experience. Everything students need to master the skills and concepts of the course is built right into this online system, including an interactive diagnostic study tool, an interactive media-enhanced ebook, student activities manual (Heinle eSAM), video, partner and group voice-recorded activities, grammar tutorial videos, and more. With its easy-to-use interface, instructors can set up an entire term’s work in minutes; assign audio-enhanced tests and activities; upload, share, and rate videos and other materials via Share it!, access students’ grades; and more.
Blackboard and Cengage Learning iLrn
Cengage Learning iLrn provides institutions with a solution for a powerful language-teaching environment, while also providing a rich student centered experience. Combined with an advanced Blackboard Learn integration, the result is highly-accessible and dynamic instructional content.
Key Features include:
- Deep integration: Single sign-on, class or chapter-level content links and gradebook integration allow instructors and students to manage all language learning processes from within Blackboard Learn.
- Intuitive, easy-to-use interface: Sleek, modern display enables easy selection and sharing of instructional content.
- Anytime, anywhere access: Web-based technology and responsive design ensure a superior experience inside and outside Blackboard Learn.
- Security and privacy: Role-based permissions restrict access to data based on user type and context.
How is this integration delivered?
The Cengage Learning iLrn integration delivered through the Partner Cloud Building Block. This building block connects to the Blackboard Partner Cloud, which streamlines our inventory of content building blocks into a single registration and activation process. While eliminating the challenges of managing old and new building block versions, the Partner Cloud also accelerates the delivery of new Cengage features and product updates.
How do I get started?
Visit Behind the Blackboard to download the Partner Cloud Building Block for Blackboard Learn, Service Packs 10 and above. The building block comes bundled with Blackboard Learn 9.1, Service Pack 13. After installation, the Cengage Learning iLrn integration must be made available to faculty.
To learn how to install the Partner Cloud Building Block and configure the Cengage Learning iLrn integration, view or download the Administrator Guide in PDF format (available in English only).
Do I need to enable Blackboard Cloud to use the Cengage Learning iLrn integration?
Yes. The Blackboard Cloud must be enabled to take advantage of all features within Blackboard Cloud Services, including the Blackboard Partner Cloud through which the Cengage Learning iLrn integration is delivered. Specifically, the Cloud Connector must be enabled so that the Cloud can communicate back to the specified URL. Cloud Profiles and Social Learning Tools are NOT automatically enabled after the Blackboard Cloud is enabled. Neither of these features are required to use the Cengage Learning iLrn integration.
Bi-directional communication to the Cloud Services is required. If you are running Blackboard from behind a firewall as a test server or for security reasons, you need to open the firewall to use these features.
How does an instructor get started?
One of the first steps requires the user to start in their Blackboard account and then log-in to (or create) their iLrn account to effect the link. This only needs to be completed one time. Any further login to iLrn from Blackboard will be “single sign on” from Blackboard. Instructors will still need a Book Key to identify the materials they have adopted for their course. Students will no longer need Course Codes, but will still need a Book Key to show they have purchased access to the materials. Both types of users will still be able to access using the Cengage iLrn site. The integration will not eliminate the instructor workflow within the iLrn Instructor Workstation.
How is the iLrn integration different than MindLinks?
Students do not need a MindLink access code to access iLrn through their BB course. They will use the same iLrn PAC that comes in their package. There will not be any deep linking of iLrn activities within Blackboard. Grade return is at the course level/chapter level, not the activity level.
If my institution already has a MindLinks Building Block installed, do we need to install something new for the iLrn integration?
Not necessarily. iLrn/Bb integration works via the Partner Cloud Building Block, which is Bb’s new method for integrating publisher content (such as Cengage iLrn/HLC) and which will eliminate the need to create custom building blocks. This Building Block is standard in the latest Service Packs of Bb, so would not require the institution’s Bb Admin to load anything new if they are using the latest Service Pack. If you have the opportunity to speak with someone who knows about the specific Bb version you can tell him/her the following: the Partner Cloud Building Block is standard in Bb Learn 9.1 Service Pack 13 and later (the current SP is 14), and can be loaded in Bb Learn 9.1 running Service Packs 10-12. Note that a school could have the MindLink Building Block installed, which it will continue to use; AND the Partner Cloud for iLrn/HLC.
What versions of Blackboard Learn will support the integration?
The integration will work on Blackboard Learn Release 9.1, Service Packs 10 and above.
Where can I find additional support materials?
Additional support resources can be found at the Cengage Training and Support site.
