Import Course Cartridges

This information applies only to the Original Course View.

Course cartridges are premade materials produced by professional authors, editors, and publishers that you can download and add to a course.

Course cartridges offer complete sets of teaching tools provided by academic publishers. In one central location, you can find relevant, publisher-created materials. After you download the materials to your course, you are free to customize the content. You can add and delete materials to correlate with specific topics covered in your classroom.

To use course cartridges in your course, download them from the site listed in these download instructions and install with a download key obtained from the publisher. You can't add course cartridge content without a download key.

About copy-protected cartridges

Cartridges may be designated as copy-protected or open access. Content in copy-protected cartridges isn't included when you export or copy a course. Only one copy-protected cartridge may exist in a course.

You may add multiple open access cartridges to a course, including a course that already contains a copy-protected cartridge.

You can freely copy, export, and import open access cartridge content added to a course.

Cartridge operations

No restrictions exist for open access cartridge content during import, export, archive, restore, or copy operations. This content is treated like any other content in your course.

Copy-protected cartridge content has these limitations during the operations:

  • Archive: When you archive a course, all cartridge content in the course is saved with the archive.
  • Restore: When you restore an archived course, the cartridge content is included in the restored course.
  • Export: When you export a course, cartridge content isn't included.
  • Import: The only time cartridge content is included with a course import is if the package was created as an archive. Cartridge content isn't included in exported packages.
  • Copy: Cartridge content is always included in a Course Copy with Users (Exact Copy) operation. You have the option to include cartridge content as part of Copy Course Materials into a New Course or Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course.

Student access to course cartridges

Instruct the students enrolled in your course to purchase the required textbook or other publisher-provided materials that contain the access key.

When they first access the course content, students are required to provide an access key. After validation, students no longer need the access key.

If you can't answer a course cartridge question, ask students to contact the cartridge publisher directly. The campus bookstore or department in charge of ordering textbooks may be able to help students contact the publisher.
