Add Voice Tools to a Content Area

Enrich your students' learning experience by adding voice tools to your course content areas.

  1. From the course menu, select the content area to which you want to add a voice authoring tool.
  2. Confirm that Edit Mode is ON.
  3. Select the Tools list and select the voice authoring tool you want to add to your content area.

If you don't see the tool you want to use, this means it is not enabled. To learn how to enable it, see Enable Voice Authoring Tools.

  4. Read the following topics to learn how to configure the specific voice tools:

More on creating course content

All voice tools have the following options:

  • Make the content available: Select Yes to make this voice tool available to others in the course.
  • Open in new window: Select Yes to display the content in a new browser window.
  • Track number of views: Select Yes to turn on Statistics Tracking for this tool. More on statistics tracking reports.
  • Choose date and time restrictions: Select a date range if you want this tool to be available for a limited period only.

Add Voice Email tool

When you use the voice email tool, you are building a reusable email form, not a single email. Anyone in the course can use these forms to send emails to instructors only, to students only, or to both instructors and students.

  1. In the Tools menu in a content area, select Voice Email.
  2. In the new window, type a title and description.
  3. Define your settings:
    • Audio quality: Adjust the quality of audio for recordings based on the environment in which voice email will be used. Keep in mind that higher quality settings require more bandwidth.
    • Max message length: Specify a maximum allowable length. The options range between 15 seconds and 20 minutes.
    • Include Reply Links: Enable this option if you want email recipients to be able to reply to voice emails with their own voice emails.
    • Pre-fill Subject field?: Select Yes if you want all emails created with this voice email form to contain the same subject line. Then enter a subject line in the text field.
  4. Select the recipients for messages sent using this voice email form: Instructors, Students ,or All.
  5. Set your options.
  6. Select Submit. The voice email tool appears in your content area.

Users can select the link to open the form and create voice emails.

Add a Voice Board tool

The voice board tool is a threaded, voice-based discussion forum. While you may have used message boards before, voice boards take communication to another level by adding voice to an intuitive, conversational interface. Voice boards are more than communication tools: you also can use them to assess your students through the voice board integration with the Grade Center.

  1. In the Tools menu in a content area, select Voice Board.
  2. In the new window, type a title and description.
  3. Define your settings:
    • Audio quality: Adjust the quality of audio for recordings based on the environment in which voice board will be used. Keep in mind that higher quality settings require more bandwidth.
    • Max message length: Specify a maximum allowable length. The options range between 15 seconds and 20 minutes.
    • Display short message titles: Select this option if you want to make the display more compact.
    • Display messages in chronological order: Select this option if you want to display the oldest messages first, at the top.
    • Allow students to forward messages: Select this option if you want students to be able to forward messages from the voice board via email.
    • Allow students to start a new thread: Select this option if you want students to be able to start a new thread (a series of messages) on the voice board.
    • Make discussion threads private: Select this option if you don't want students to be able to view each other’s threads.
    • Grade: Select this option if you want to assign grades for each student that accesses the board, which are integrated with the Grade Center. The 'Points possible' field determines the maximum possible grade for scoring.
  4. Set your options.
  5. Select Submit. The voice board tool appears in your content area.

Users can select the link in the tool to use the voice board. Students can reply to exiting posts and, by default, create new posts or threads. As an instructor, you have full suite of tools for managing your voice boards. You can edit, delete, import, export, publish, filter and reorder voice board messages.

Add a Voice Presentation tool

The voice presentation tool enables you to add voice commentary to web content. You can create a vocal slide show, web tour, or review of any curricula across disciplines—including web pages, images, and internet-based media.

  1. In the Tools menu in a content area, select Voice Presentation.
  2. In the new window, type a title and description.
  3. Define your settings:
    • Audio quality: Adjust the quality of audio for recordings based on the environment in which voice presentation will be used. Keep in mind that higher quality settings require more bandwidth.
    • Max message length: Specify a maximum allowable length. The options range between 15 seconds and 20 minutes.
    • Allow students to comment on slides: Select this option if you want students to be able to add vocal and/or text comments to each slide within the voice presentation.
    • Make slide comments private: Select this option if you don't want students to be able to view each other’s comments within the voice presentation. The instructor can still view all comments.
  4. Set your options.
  5. Select Submit. The voice presentation tool appears in your content area.

Users select the link in the tool to open the voice presentation, which opens in a new browser tab or window. Web page content appears to the the right of the presentation. Not all webpages, such as YouTube videos, are allowed to launch in html frames. If you don't see the content of the webpage to the right of the applet, it either means it is not allowable content or it may mean the browser has disabled the content. If the latter is the case, enable the content in your browser.

Students can add new content to the presentation and, by default, comment on existing content. As an instructor, you have a full suite of tools for managing your voice presentations. You can add, edit and delete content as well as comment on content.

Add a Voice Podcaster tool

The voice podcaster is a complete, start-to-finish podcasting application. It allows you and your students to author vocal recordings and distribute them over the internet using syndication feeds. All .MP3 files are hosted on the Voice Authoring server, which also automatically creates the RSS feed. Users can play messages directly within voice podcaster, download audio from the feed, or subscribe using their preferred RSS reader.

  1. In the Tools menu in a content area, select Voice Podcaster.
  2. In the new window, type a title and description.
  3. Define your settings:
    • Display short message titles: Select this option if you want to provide less information, making the display more compact.
    • Audio quality: Adjust the quality of audio for recordings based on the environment in which voice presentation will be used. Keep in mind that higher quality settings require more bandwidth.
    • Allow students to post to podcast: Select this option if you want students to be able to add vocal and textual posts to podcasts.
    • Podcast auto publish: By default, posts are published, and therefore downloaded to the computers of subscribed users, after 5 minutes of creation. You can adjust this setting to a shorter or longer duration.
  4. Set your options.
  5. Select Submit. The voice podcaster tool appears in your content area. Users can select the link in the tool to open the voice podcaster.

By default, students can only subscribe to a podcast. However, when you create the podcaster tool, you can enable students to post to podcasts as well. As an instructor, you have a full suite of tools for managing your voice podcasts. You can add, edit, delete, import, and export content.
