Multiple Answer Questions

Your institution controls which tools are available in the Original Course View. The tests tool is always available to instructors in the Ultra Course View.

Multiple Answer questions allow students to choose more than one answer. Use this type of question when more than one answer is correct. For example, in the medical field, ask students to select symptoms associated with a medical condition.

Partial and negative credit

Doesn't seem familiar? Jump to the "Ultra" help about partial and negative credit.

You can allow partial and negative credit for Multiple Answer questions. Partial credit rewards students whose answers demonstrate incomplete mastery of the material. Use negative credit to discourage guessing. You can allow negative scores for incorrect answers and for the question.

You must enable the options to specify partial or negative credit on the Question Settings page to use them for individual questions. The option to allow negative scores won't appear unless you selected the option to allow partial credit.

ULTRA: Create a Multiple Answer question

Doesn't seem familiar? Jump to the "Original" help about creating Multiple Answer questions.

To create Multiple Answer questions, use the Multiple Choice question type and choose multiple correct answers. You can allow partial credit and negative credit for answers.

You can edit the text of any question or answer, even after students have made submissions. After submissions exist, you can't add new questions, delete any question, edit the values, or change the correct answers.

Multiple Choice and Multiple Answer questions are graded automatically. If a test only has these types of questions, the test scores are posted automatically for students to view.

Doesn't seem familiar? Jump to the "Original" help about partial and negative credit.

Partial credit rewards students whose answers demonstrate incomplete mastery of the material. Use negative credit to discourage guessing. You can allow negative scores for incorrect answers. Make a selection in the Scoring options menu:

  • All correct answers must be selected to receive full credit
  • Give credit for correct answers with no penalty for incorrect answers
  • Give credit for correct answers, but subtract points for incorrect answers

Questions have a default value of 10 points. Select the points box to type a new value. If you want more than four answer boxes, select Add Choice. You can add as many answer boxes as you need. Select the Move icon to move an answer.
