Personal Settings

Your institution controls which tools are available.

In the Original experience, My Blackboard and the user menu are available everywhere in Blackboard Learn.

Access the menu next to your name in the page header. From the user menu, you can access all your courses and personal settings, such as text size and personal information. From My Blackboard, you can access due dates, users, and social tools that help you discover, connect, communicate, and collaborate with your Blackboard learning network.

Edit your personal information

You can edit the information that appears in your user account on the Edit Personal Information page. Changes you make appear throughout Blackboard Learn. For example, if you change your last name, the new last name appears in all the courses you're enrolled in or teaching. Most of the personal information is optional.

Your institution may not allow you to change your personal information, password, or settings through Blackboard Learn. Blackboard Learn often shares data with other systems on campus, such as the registrar's office. Your institution may need to ensure that your information is the same everywhere. In this case, your institution will have a different way to change your information. Contact your institution for more information.

  1. Access the menu next to your name in the page header > Settings > Personal Information > Edit Personal Information. You can also access Personal Information in the Tools panel on the My Institution tab.
  2. Make changes as needed.
  3. Select Submit.

Change personal settings

You can manage your personal settings that control the language pack, calendar choice, and page instructions in the system.

  1. Access the menu next to your name in the page header > Settings > Personal Information > Change Personal Settings. You can also access Personal Information in the Tools panel on the My Institution tab.
  2. On the Change Personal Settings page, you can select a language pack from the menu that is localized to your culture.
  3. If available, you can control the calendar display. Select an option from the First day of week menu.
  4. Select Yes to display page instructions for brief explanations on each page. Some pages have links to More Help that open new windows with additional steps for the features.
  5. Select Submit.

Set privacy options

You can choose the information you want others to see. Your information appears in the roster, on group pages, and in the Grade Center to instructors. You may also choose to show this information in the User Directory in the Tools panel on the My Institution tab. If you choose not to share your email address, it doesn't appear anywhere in Blackboard Learn.

If your institution has turned on the profile and the people tools, you can set privacy settings within your profile.

  1. Access the menu next to your name in the page header > Settings > Personal Information > Set Privacy Options. You can also access Personal Information in the Tools panel on the My Institution tab.
  2. On the Set Privacy Options page, select the appropriate check boxes to make your personal information visible to other Blackboard users and in the User Directory.
  3. Select the appropriate check boxes if you don't want other course and organization members to contact you by email.
  4. Select the appropriate check boxes If you don't want your name to appear in course and organization rosters.
  5. Select Submit.

Change your password

We recommend that you change your password periodically to ensure security. Don't use common personal information as your password, such as your name.

Log in to change your password. Access the menu next to your name in the page header > Settings > Personal Information > Change Password.

Passwords are case-sensitive, must not contain spaces, and must be at least one character long. Passwords can contain a maximum of 32 characters.

Forgot your password?

  1. Navigate to the URL where you access Blackboard.
  2. On the login page, select Forgot Your Password? or Forgot Password?
  3. Type your first name, last name, and username. You need an active email address associated with your account to receive instructions. Or, type your first name, last name, and email address.
  4. Submit.

After you submit your information, you can create a new password based on instructions you receive in an email. Your current password remains active until you change it.

ULTRA: Change your password

If you see a list on the left where your name appears first, your institution uses the Ultra experience. You can change your password with the Forgot Password? link on the sign-in page. If you're already signed in, sign out to access the page.

Type your first name, last name, and username. You need an active email address associated with your account to receive instructions. Or, type your first name, last name, and email address.

After you submit your information, you can create a new password based on instructions you receive in an email. Your current password remains active until you change it.

You can also change your password in your profile. Go to your profile and select Change Password. On the Change Password panel, type your old password and your new password. Select Save when you're finished.

Your institution controls whether this feature is available to you. If you change your system password, it won’t affect any external accounts (such as Google) you use to log in to Blackboard Learn.


ULTRA: Edit your info and preferences

Your profile is the place to edit information attached to your persona. Your profile appears with some information, and you can't delete your profile. Your institution decides what you can customize.

  1. In the list where your name appears first, select your name to access your profile.
  2. Select the arrow next to one of the profile information types, such as Privacy Settings. A new panel appears.
  3. Make changes. Your information is saved as you type it.
  4. Cancel or X erases your changes and closes the panel.
