Add Questions

After you add a quiz you can add questions to it. You can add a new question or reuse questions.

New questions are added to a question bank and stored in question categories. This makes it easier to organize, reuse, and share your questions. It also gives you the power to generate quizzes that are different with each attempt.

You can't add or remove questions after students have taken the quiz.

Add new questions

Steps in Snap: Create learning activity or resource > Quiz > Add > Save and display > Edit quiz

Steps in other themes: Turn editing on > Add an activity or resource > Quiz > Add > Save and display > Edit quiz

When you add new questions to a quiz you are also adding them to a question bank and category. The question bank and question categories make it easier to organize, reuse, and share your questions with other courses and teachers.

  1. From the Editing quiz page, select Add.
  2. Select a new question.
  3. Select a question type. A description of the question type appears on the page if you are unsure what question type to pick.

Add random questions

Steps in Snap: Create learning activity or resource > Quiz > Add > Save and display > Edit quiz

Steps in other themes: Turn editing on > Add an activity or resource > Quiz > Add > Save and display > Edit quiz

When you are building a quiz, you can have random questions from a category of questions drawn for each student. Each student sees different questions from other students or attempts each time they attempt the quiz.

  1. From the Editing quiz page, select Add.
  2. Select a random question.
  3. Select the question category from the Category menu.

You may want to create more categories to group questions for random selection.

  4. Select how many random questions you want to appear from the Number or random questions menu.

Example: If you want students to see one question from the collection of questions in the category, select 1.

  5. Select Add random question.

You can also create a new category from this page and add random questions to it. To learn more, see Question categories.

Question categories

Steps in Snap: Admin > Question bank > Categories

Steps in other themes: Turn editing on > Administration > Course administration > Question bank > Categories

Quiz questions are stored in categories. Initially, each course has only one category called Default. You can create more categories to organize your questions. Categories make it easier to find questions and makes the use of random questions and matching question easier. Create a hierarchy of categories by using subcategories.

Example: Create a category for each lesson objective. Add questions to that category to assess student knowledge of that objective. Build a quiz using random questions from this category.

The categories of questions are stored within different contexts within the site. When you access the Category menu, you see some or all of the following categories:

  • Quiz: These questions are only available within the context of this particular quiz.
  • Course: These questions are available to any quiz within the course.
  • Category: These questions are available to any quiz within any course within this course category. This is useful if all the courses within a department are organized within the same category.
  • System: This question category is the default category for any course on the entire site.

Question bank

Steps in Snap: Admin > Question bank > Questions

Steps in other themes: Turn editing on > Administration > Course administration > Question bank > Questions

The question bank stores all questions in the course. You can create, preview, and edit questions directly in the question bank. You don't have to add the questions to a quiz first.

You can access the question bank from a quiz activity, the quiz administration menu, and the course administration menu.

Order and paging

Steps in Snap: Quiz > Admin > Edit quiz

Steps in other themes: Quiz > Administration > Quiz administration > Edit quiz

Arrange questions in the order you want.

  • Change the order: Use the drag-and-drop feature to reorder the questions. The numbers next to the questions change to reflect the new order.
  • Add a new section: If you want to add a new section after a particular question, select Add after the question. Select a new section heading.
  • Spread questions out over more than one page: Select Repaginate and the number of questions you want per page.
