Calendar

Communicate important events and helps students complete work on time.

Availability and due dates for activities, such as quizzes and assignments, automatically appear in the calendar.

Add a calendar

Steps in Snap: Course Tools > Edit course blocks > Add a Block > Calendar

Steps in other themes: Turn editing on > Add a Block > Calendar

Point to a highlighted date to display the day's events and to click through to the activities. Users can personalize their view by hiding event types.

You can also access the calendar in Upcoming events block.

The calendar displays these event types:

  • Global: Viewable in all courses. Created only by site administrators or a user with rights to create site-wide events.

  • Course: Viewable only within a course; created by an instructor.

  • Group: Viewable only by members of specific groups; created by an instructor.

  • User: Private event created by an individual user, including students, and viewable only by that user.

Add calendar events

Teachers can add calendar events for the course, which are visible to all users. Students can add User events, which are private and seen only by the user who created it.

  1. Access the Calendar and select the month.
  2. Select New event.
  3. On the New Event page, select a Type of event from the menu.
  4. Type a short and descriptive title and optional description.
  5. Set a Date and specify the time.
  6. Optionally, set a duration or repeat the event.
  7. Save changes.

Edit and delete events

  1. From the calendar's month view, select an event.
  2. Select Edit event to change the title, description, date, and duration. You can change how the event repeats only if you chose repeat while creating the event.
  3. Select Delete icon to remove the event. If the event was repeated, you can choose to delete only the selected event or all in the series.

Export calendar

You can export calendar events to an external calendar, such as Microsoft Outlook, iCal, or Google Calendar. This process exports the events currently in the calendar and does not continue to sync in the future.

Windows

  1. Click Export Calendar.
  2. Select options.
  3. Click Export. Alternatively, click Get calendar URL if your external calendar application requires it.
  4. A pop-up window asks which program should open the .ics file or where to save it. Leave the default selection for Open with and cilck OK. Alternatively, you can save the .ics file to your computer and go to the external calendar to import it.

Mac

  1. Click iCal.
  2. A pop-up window asks which program should open the .ics file or where to save it. Leave the default selection for Open with and cilck OK. Alternatively, you can save the .ics file to your computer and go to the external calendar to import it.

Calendar subscriptions

You can subscribe to an external calendar to view its entries within the Moodlerooms calendar.

  1. From the calendar select Manage subscriptions and select Calendar URL or Calendar file (.ics)
  2. In a new browser window, go to the external calendar application to obtain the calendar URL or .ics file from the external calendar application.

Example: In Google CalendarTM go to Settings > Calendars tab > Export Calendars to download your calendar in .ics format.

  3. Return to Moodlerooms and select an Update interval, such as daily, to tell Moodlerooms how often to retrieve new entries from the external calendar. Updating is a one-way process. New external calendar entries appear in your course calendar, but your course calendar entries do not appear in the external calendar.
  4. The types of events in the drop-down list are determined by administrator settings.
  5. Add.

Set your calendar preferences

Personalize your calendar display by selecting 12-hour or 24-hour time, a start day for weeks, and how many upcoming events can be listed. I you regularly choose to hide certain event types, you can opt save your event filter settings so that they do not reset each time you log out.

From the calendar, select the month and Preferences.

List of future events

You can add the Upcoming events block to display a list of the next calendar events. To change how many events show in this list, go to Calendar block. Select the month and Preferences. Select Upcoming events look-ahead and select number of days.
