Redirect Users to Different Landing Pages

The Profile Redirect block allows your institution to automatically redirect a user from the front page of the site or the My Moodle page (depending on the location of the Profile Redirect block) to a different course. The course that the user is redirected to is based on a value in a mapped profile field that matches the value in a specified field within the course settings. This block provides clients with flexibility in their user's landing page beyond the front page and My Moodle page.

For example, you can redirect users based on their area of study or their department of education. If a user belongs to the Business department, the site redirects to that department site. You can redirect the users based on any of their profile information, including preferred language. Your institution needs to have the courses available in the specific language, and when users login, they are redirected to their courses in their language.

Before you can set the Profile Redirect, you have to add the block to either the front page or the My Courses/My Home page. Only a site administrator can add an use the Profile Redirect block.

Add Profile Redirect to Front Page

Steps: Administration > Front page settings > Turn editing on > Add a block > Profile Redirect

When you add and configure the Profile Redirect block on the front page, once the user logs into the site, the front page is redirected to the specific profile setting.

  1. From Administration select Turn editing on.
  2. From the Add a block area, select Profile Redirect.

The Profile Redirect block is added to the front page.

The block is not marked and is only available when the Turn editing on is enabled.

Add Profile Redirect to My Courses/My Home Page

When you add and configure the Profile Redirect block on the My Courses or My Home page, once the user logs into the site and then selects the My Courses or My Home page (whatever your institution has named that section), the user is redirected. The front page of the site remains the institution's default page, while when the user connects to their personal navigation, the page is redirected to the specific profile setting.

  1. From the Navigation block, select My Courses or My Home page.
  2. Select Customize this page.
  3. From the Add a block area, select Profile Redirect.

The Profile Redirect block is added to the page.

The block is not marked and is only available when the Customize this page option is enabled.

Set the Redirect

Steps: Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Blocks > Profile Redirect

  1. From Site Administration select Plugins, Blocks, and Profile Redirect.
  2. Select the user's profile information to use when redirecting the page from the Profile Field list.

This setting maps the user's profile information to determine the page redirect.

    Options include:

    • ID number - A course identification code. This option redirects the user's page to a specific course.
    • Institution - The default option setting the page to the institution's home page.
    • Country - This option redirects the user's page to their selected country information.
    • City/town - This option redirects the user's page to their city or town information.
    • Language - This option redirects the user's page to their selected language.
    • Department - This option redirects the user's page to their department or major of study.
  3. Select the course information to use when redirecting the page from the Course Field list.

This setting is the data that is used to map to the user. Options include:

    • Short name - The abbreviated name for the course that is mapped to the specific user based on their profile information.
    • Full name - The full name for the course that is mapped to the specific user based on their profile information.
    • ID number - The course identification code that is mapped to the specific user based on their profile information.
  4. Type the name of the Default course to use as the redirect page if the user's profile information is not available.

Type the specific Short name, Full name, or ID number as selected in the Course Field list.

  5. Select Save changes.

Best practice: Use an authentication plugin

Blackboard recommends that you use an authentication system, such as Conduit, to create users and set the value for the user's profile field that matches the value set in the Profile Redirect block. Depending on how your institution configures the authentication plugin with the plugin's Settings page, users may not be able to update the Profile Field data. If the Profile Field is locked, users can't update the information manually, causing page misdirections.

Best practice: Set redirect to user study/department

If your institution would like to redirect students and instructors to their major/department, be sure to set the following:

  1. Create or upload a course page for the department or area of study, such as Biology.

The course page for the department must exist, if you want to redirect users to the specific study. Be sure to set the Short name, Full name, and add the ID number.

  2. In the Profile Redirect page, complete the following settings:
    • Select Department for the Profile Field list.
    • Select the course information to use when redirecting the page from the Course Field list. Select Short name, Full name, or ID number.
    • Select Save changes.
  3. Add the user accounts.

When a user account is added to the site (manually or through an upload), whatever information is set in the Department field is used as the page redirect when the user logs into the system.

The user can update the department information by editing their profile. The Department box is available in the Optional area of the Edit profile page.

Best practice: Set redirect to user language

If your institution would like to redirect students and instructors to their preferred language, be sure to set the following:

  1. Create or upload a course page developed in the targeted language.

The course page for the language must exist if you want to redirect users to the specific study. Be sure to set the ID number as the specific language.

  2. In the Profile Redirect page, complete the following settings:
    • Select Language for the Profile Field list.
    • Select the course ID number to use when redirecting the page from the Course Field list.
    • Select Save changes.
  3. Add the user accounts.

When a user account is added to the site (manually or through an upload), whatever information is set in the Preferred Language field is used as the page redirect when the user logs into the system.

The user can update the department information by editing their profile. The Languagebox is available in the Optional area of the Edit profile page.
